FSE Book Fair is Coming and we NEED your HELP!
Flagstone's Spring "Happy Camper" Book Fair will arrive soon.  Students and staff are looking forward to this event, and it is the perfect opportunity to purchase books for summer reading for your child.  All profits from this fair goes towards the purchase of new books for Flagstone's library.  We are looking for volunteers to set up the fair, decorate, help students with their "wish lists", restock product, run cash registers, and help in taking it all down and packing up on the last day.  Parents, grandparents, and high school students please take a minute to check out the attached sign up, and see where you might be able to help.  We need you to make this happen!

Summer Opportunities
Summer is a time to have fun, friends, and free time!  It is also important, though, to keep kids reading and writing throughout the summer in order to support their academic development.  Flagstone is again offering SUMMER LITERACY CAMP.  This camp provides your child with the opportunity to engage in direct reading and writing instruction daily and practice newly acquired skills.  Our theme this year is Nature!  This is open to any Douglas County School District students entering 1st through 6th grade and is taught by certified DCSD staff members.  It will be held June 12th to the 23rd from 8:30-11:30 am, Monday through Friday.  The cost for this two-week opportunity is $132 per child.  This is based on 10 students.  The price may be more or less depending on enrollment.  If you have any questions, please email Rachel Steppuhn at rasteppuhn@dcsdk12.org.  Please register by May 24th here.  Click on Enrichment and we will be there. Thank you for supporting this summer opportunity for your learner.  We can’t wait to see you this summer!

FSE at Freddy's
    • Use this flier Freddy's Flier -- you can take a picture and show it on your smartphone.
    • If you show the flier on the evening of the 18th FSE PTO will get 15% of all the sales that show the flier.
FSE FALL FUN RUN!!!
    • We are preparing for our annual Fall Fundraiser right now!  Staff and PTO are working on planning this event and the first step is to work on getting shirts for the students.  We are launching our annual T-Shirt contest in May and are asking if any local companies would like to help sponsor this event by buying a portion of the cost of the shirts.  We already have a $750 donation from Keller Williams Action Realty-Kayfes Real Estate Services.  They will have a logo printed on the back of our shirts! We still need $750 dollars more to pay for the shirts.  Any other company that donates will also have a logo printed on the shirt.
FSE Lock Down Drill
    • We have a required lock down drill next week.  We talk with students about a possible animal getting into the building and we have to turn our lights out, lock our doors and get out of sight.  Let me know if you have any questions.
FSE Backpack program
    • Thank you to all who have donated to the backpack program! As the year winds down, it would be wonderful if we could stock the cabinets for the next school year.
    • We are looking for items such as: goldfish, bars, fruit cups, applesauce, cereal, peanut butter, pasta noodles, pasta sauce, canned fruit or veggies, and baking mixes.
    • Thank you so much for your help and continually support! :)

Safety Issues
  • Please keep your students home until 8:55 since our campus is closed.  We are having some issues with students being unsafe with their bikes around 8:40 and others playing unsupervised on the playground.
Thank You!
  • FSE Staff would like to thank our wonderful PTO for their generosity in providing meals during conference nights.  The food was delicious and so thoughtful!  We appreciate you!

17-18 Class Placement
Dear Parents,
Creating balanced class lists that meet the needs of all students is a difficult endeavor.  This process involves hours of thoughtful dialogue between classroom teachers, administrators, and other staff members. We take this responsibility very seriously.  Our process for creating class lists is detailed below.
  • Teachers identify the social and academic needs of each student.  They refer to existing data and record pertinent information to assist them in their decision-making.
  • Teachers meet as grade level teams to form class lists that are balanced.  Balanced classrooms meet each student’s academic, social and emotional needs.  Teachers consider each child’s personality, academic strengths, needs and friendships.  Learning specialists and the specials team also collaborate with classroom teachers to provide feedback.
  • Each grade level team creates a draft of their class list, which is then submitted to me.  I review each child’s placement and ensure that all parent input has been considered. Classroom teachers approve any additional changes to ensure classes remain balanced.
  • Class lists are finalized in July to reflect the addition of new students.

This process is consistent across grades K-5.

We strongly believe that this detailed and collaborative process creates learning environments that benefit all students.  It is a delicate balance that takes tremendous thought by professionals who know and care about your child.  Please remember that our ultimate goal is always to create balanced classes that promote the success of each child.  Please also know that your child is placed in a classroom for very specific reasons and that our process benefits all students.  Because of the input and thought given by teachers, parents, and administrators, we are reluctant to make changes once this process is complete as moving one child can disrupt the balance of an entire classroom.

We do value parent input and welcome any insight you wish to share about your child’s strengths, needs and learning style.  We will take into consideration all pertinent information that you share with me on or before FRIDAY, April 28th.  While we welcome your input, we cannot honor specific teacher requests.  Please put your thoughts in writing and address them to me (Kelli Smith).  I will accept either a letter or email (kelli.smith@dcsdk12.org).

I cannot express enough how important it is that your thoughts are in writing.  As you can imagine, I receive a great deal of parent input and verbal information that is nearly impossible to track.  Further, please direct all of this communication to me, as I am ultimately responsible for reviewing final class lists in July when teachers are not available.

Sincerely,

Kelli Smith, FSE Principal
